aj burnett cc sabathiaGame 2 of the 2009 World Series is set for Thursday in New York, with the hosts down 1-0 after last night’s 6-1 Philadelphia triumph. The Phillies are in search of their second straight title, and took a big step towards that goal in winning the opener. Tonight, they’ll send Pedro Martinez to the hill to face A.J. Burnett. Oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com have installed the Yankees as a huge -200 wagering odds favorite, crazy considering how poorly they played in Game 1.

The New York Yankees were left utterly dumbfounded in Game 1. Chase Utley battled C.C. Sabathia in two at bats, fouling off strikes until the lefthander got just a bit too much of the plate and rifled two shots over the right field wall. Cliff Lee did the rest, in stifling New York on one run and six hits for complete game gem, which included 10 strikeouts and zero walks. Lee was seemingly in his own world on the mound with a pair of unusual fielding plays that he was almost flippant about.

New York hitters had nary a clue what to do with Lee and they hope to have much better success against Pedro Martinez or their suddenly dwindling chances of winning the Fall Classic will take another severe hit. What’s the big deal about losing the first game? The winner of Game 1 of the World Series has won seven straight World Series, 11 of the last 12 and 12 of 14 with the introduction of the wild card teams.

A.J. Burnett will be asked to do his best Lee-imitation. In his first season in the Pinstripes, Burnett is 13-9 with a 4.04 ERA and has not picked up a decision in the postseason with two decent starts and one pretty good beating. The concern for manager Joe Girardi is Burnett’s command. After posting an almost 2 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio during the regular season, the former Florida Marlin has 13 K’s and 10 W’s in three playoff appearances. Sportsbook.comhas New York as a -200 favorite with total of Un 9 and the Yankees have won 11 of 13 in this spot with Burnett on the hill at home.

Doubts were expressed about Philadelphia feeling any pressure, being the defending champions. The numbers said the Phillies were underdogs coming into the series, which just added another log on the fire. No home field advantage for the second straight year, having the best road record in baseball at 52-34 takes care of that.

Pedro Martinez will attempt to squeeze what is left out of his right arm. Martinez is 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA since joining the Phillies and pitched seven shutout innings against the Dodgers in 2-1 loss that the bullpen gave away.

Philadelphia has owned October and will attempt to do same in November as they are 19-5 in the postseason the last two years and 27-11 after allowing four runs or less four straight games.

Coming into the series, two elements were deemed very important in determining the outcome. Who could jack the most balls over the wall from these power-laden clubs would affect the outcome and Chase Utley answered that one. Also, getting the starting pitchers out of the game and see how the relief pitchers would perform. What chance New York had late in the game was swept out to the Hudson River, with the Yanks pen rocked for four runs in the last two innings.

FOX has Game 2 beginning at 7:55 Eastern and the last five meetings between these teams in New York have produced five Unders.

Wagering Odds: Two Tilts Highlight MLB Monday Slate

justin verlanderWith only nine games on the baseball wagering odds beat this Monday at Sportsbook.com, some games take on greater importance than others. Two games in particular standout for today, Detroit at Los Angeles Angels and the final game between San Francisco and Colorado. Here is a wagering odds outlook at each conflict.

Tigers at Angels MLB Wagering Odds

Detroit (65-58, -1.2 units) is three games clear in the loss column of Chicago, thanks to its efforts at home. The Tigers have had nothing to roar about with 25-38 road record, scoring just four runs per game, which is 25th in baseball wagering odds. Detroit just lost a series to an appalling Oakland club and are now off to LA to face an Angels squad that loves to run. The Tigers are 3-14 in road games vs good base-running teams averaging 0.85 or more stolen bases a game over the last three seasons.

Justin Verlander (13-7, 3.29 ERA) takes the mound against Angels, having 2.70 ERA in his last eight starts. The only knock on Verlander is an 0-2 record with a 4.55 ERA in five starts (Tigers 1-4) against the Angels.

The Halos (74-48, +24.1 units) are six games ahead of Texas in the AL West and will send their best pitcher to the mound in Jered Weaver (13-4, 3.89). Weaver’s been a little spotty in the second half of the season, but is coming off a complete game road shutout at Cleveland. Weaver is 5-1 in his last nine starts, with an ERA of 5.43, however that has gone somewhat unnoticed with Angels batters scoring 8.2 runs in that stretch. Weaver is 8-1 at the Big A this season) and his ERA is more than a full run lower at home.

Sportsbook.com has the Angels as -125 money line favorites with the total at 8.5, in part because how effective they have been at home against Detroit. L.A. has won eight of 10 and 27 of last 35 at home against the Tigers and are 15-5 having lost three of their last four games this season. The Angels are 10-2 OVER after seven or more consecutive road games and Verlander and the Tigers are 10-1 OVER playing on Monday’s.

The opening pitch is set for 7:05 Pacific with Detroit 17-36 in road games when playing against a team with a winning record.

Giants at Rockies MLB Wagering Odds

The Rockies (70-54, +13 units) turned a deficit into an advantage with one swing of the bat yesterday and are positioned to win three of four against their closest wild card competitor. Colorado’s Seth Smith homered a hanging changeup from Tim Lincecum, giving the Rockies the lead and they went on to win 4-2. Colorado is now three games ahead of San Francisco (67-57, +10.1 units) and would like to build on that lead before traveling to the Bay Area next week to play three at San Fran.

Colorado is
20-9 after a win by two runs or less and will send Jason Marquis (14-8, 3.58) to the mound trying to become the National League’s first 15-game winner. The Rocks will face a rejuvenated Barry Zito (8-11, 4.26), who has allowed three or less runs in his last seven starts. The left-hander has been victimized by an offense that has produced a league-low 2.9 runs for a regular starting pitcher.

The Rockies are -165 money line favorites with total Un 9.5. Colorado is 16-4 (+14.6 Units) against the ML playing against a good team (Win Pct. 54% to 62%) this season and 21-12 OVER as a home favorite of -125 to -175. San Francisco is looking for the split and is 12-6 vs. a starting pitcher who throws more than 6.5 innings per start and Zito and the Giants are 13-3 UNDER in August games since 2007.

This NL West confrontation is 5:40 Pacific start. Wager on Baseball at Sportsbook.com and receive huge cash sign-up bonuses!

felix hernandezThe Detroit Tigers (62-55) open up a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners (61-57) on Tuesday at 7:05 PM EST and have the unpleasant task of facing Seattle’s best pitcher, Felix Hernandez. The Seattle ace has not lost on the road since early May and has beaten the Tigers five straight times. "We don’t have any excuses - not at this part of the season," designated hitter Miguel Cabrera said, "We want to win the division.” The Tigers send Rick Porcello to the mound on Tuesday. He is 10-7 this season with a 4.34 ERA. He is coming back from his suspension for hitting Kevin Youkilis. "It’s over with and done," Porcello said. He is 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts against Seattle this season.

The Mariners are 7-3 in their last 10 road games vs. a right-handed starter. The Mariners are 6-0 in Hernandez’s last 6 starts as a road favorite.
