andy pettitteFor the first time since 2003, the World Series wagering will be going at least six games as the Phillies and Yankees head back to New York with the Yankees holding a 3-2 series lead. The Phillies were able to power their way to an 8-6 win in Game 5 on Monday and now will try and force a Game 7 on Thursday. The last time a World Series went seven games was in 2002 when the Angels beat the Giants. New York is a -200 wagering odds favorite with a total of 9 at SBG Global. Watch the game live on FOX at 7:57pm ET!

Andy Pettitte gets the start for New York on three days’ rest while the Phillies turn to Pedro Martinez. "Definitely what we expected," said Ryan Madson, "When we split in New York, they were saying, ‘Did you think you were going to go 2-0?’ We knew it was going to be a tough series going in — evenly matched teams in different ways. We’re planning on going seven games. That’s obviously the goal, and that’s the goal for any kid growing up — to go seven games in a World Series."

Martinez allowed three runs in six innings in a 3-1 loss to the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in Game 2. He will be pitching on five days’ rest, while Pettitte will be pitching on three days’ rest.

World Series Game 2 Wagering Odds: Yankees Uncertain Favorite

aj burnett cc sabathiaGame 2 of the 2009 World Series is set for Thursday in New York, with the hosts down 1-0 after last night’s 6-1 Philadelphia triumph. The Phillies are in search of their second straight title, and took a big step towards that goal in winning the opener. Tonight, they’ll send Pedro Martinez to the hill to face A.J. Burnett. Oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com have installed the Yankees as a huge -200 wagering odds favorite, crazy considering how poorly they played in Game 1.

The New York Yankees were left utterly dumbfounded in Game 1. Chase Utley battled C.C. Sabathia in two at bats, fouling off strikes until the lefthander got just a bit too much of the plate and rifled two shots over the right field wall. Cliff Lee did the rest, in stifling New York on one run and six hits for complete game gem, which included 10 strikeouts and zero walks. Lee was seemingly in his own world on the mound with a pair of unusual fielding plays that he was almost flippant about.

New York hitters had nary a clue what to do with Lee and they hope to have much better success against Pedro Martinez or their suddenly dwindling chances of winning the Fall Classic will take another severe hit. What’s the big deal about losing the first game? The winner of Game 1 of the World Series has won seven straight World Series, 11 of the last 12 and 12 of 14 with the introduction of the wild card teams.

A.J. Burnett will be asked to do his best Lee-imitation. In his first season in the Pinstripes, Burnett is 13-9 with a 4.04 ERA and has not picked up a decision in the postseason with two decent starts and one pretty good beating. The concern for manager Joe Girardi is Burnett’s command. After posting an almost 2 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio during the regular season, the former Florida Marlin has 13 K’s and 10 W’s in three playoff appearances. Sportsbook.comhas New York as a -200 favorite with total of Un 9 and the Yankees have won 11 of 13 in this spot with Burnett on the hill at home.

Doubts were expressed about Philadelphia feeling any pressure, being the defending champions. The numbers said the Phillies were underdogs coming into the series, which just added another log on the fire. No home field advantage for the second straight year, having the best road record in baseball at 52-34 takes care of that.

Pedro Martinez will attempt to squeeze what is left out of his right arm. Martinez is 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA since joining the Phillies and pitched seven shutout innings against the Dodgers in 2-1 loss that the bullpen gave away.

Philadelphia has owned October and will attempt to do same in November as they are 19-5 in the postseason the last two years and 27-11 after allowing four runs or less four straight games.

Coming into the series, two elements were deemed very important in determining the outcome. Who could jack the most balls over the wall from these power-laden clubs would affect the outcome and Chase Utley answered that one. Also, getting the starting pitchers out of the game and see how the relief pitchers would perform. What chance New York had late in the game was swept out to the Hudson River, with the Yanks pen rocked for four runs in the last two innings.

FOX has Game 2 beginning at 7:55 Eastern and the last five meetings between these teams in New York have produced five Unders.

marlon byrdThe Texas Rangers (62-48) are proving they are not going away this season as they have moved into the Wild Card race with the Boston Red Sox (48-63). Texas is beginning a three-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 PM EST against the Cleveland Indians as they wrap up a 10-game road trip. Texas is coming off a huge series over the weekend as they took two of three from the Angels. In addition to getting into the Wild Card race they are only 3.5 games behind Los Angeles in the American League West. "We wanted to win this series, and we got it done," manager Ron Washington said. "That’s not easy to do against that team. They’re a pretty good team. I think we are, too. In fact, I know we are." SBG Global Sportsbook reports that the early Baseball Odds sees the public taking the Indians at home as a -120 favorite with total 9.5 under -120.

The Rangers can’t afford to let up in Cleveland. "So far, so good, but we have a long way to go," outfielder Marlon Byrd said, "The name of the game is not beating the Angels, it’s making the playoffs. We need to go into Cleveland and not have a letdown. We need to keep playing at a high level of intensity."

The Rangers could get Nelson Cruz back into the lineup on Tuesday. He has been out since last Monday. Dustin Nippert gets the start for Texas on Tuesday. He is 3-0 with a 2.73 ERA and is now in the rotation full time since the team designated Vicente Padilla for assignment. "I feel good that they believe in me and are giving me the opportunity," said Nippert, "I’m just going to take the ball every fifth day and try to give us a chance to win."

The Indians are also playing well. They are 12-6 in their last 18 games. They send Aaron Laffey on Tuesday. Laffey is 5-3 with a 3.58 ERA. He is 3-0 at home with a 1.98 ERA.

Take a look at the MLB wagering odds stats for Tuesday’s game. The teams have split their last 10 meetings but all of those games were in Texas. The Rangers are 5-2 in their last 7 vs. the American League Central. The Indians are 9-19 in their last 28 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Indians are 7-2 in Laffey’s last 9 starts as a home favorite.

The Under is 16-5-3 in the Rangers last 24 vs. the American League Central. The Under is 8-3-1 in the Rangers last 12 road games. The Under is 4-1 in Nippert’s last 5 starts overall. The Over is 11-3-3 in the Indians last 17 overall. The Under is 8-3-1 in the Indians last 12 home games. The Over is 8-1-1 in the last 10 meetings between the two teams.
