giants vs ravens wagering oddsThursday night in the 2010 NFL wagering produced a pair of entertaining week 3 NFL preseason odds matchups, as both games served up plenty of scoring. In the first game, the St. Louis Rams pulled off an upset, winning 36-35 as an 8-point underdog vs. the New England Patriots.

The betting public landed solidly on the Patriots in the matchup, pushing the line all the way up to -8.5 at some online sportsbooks. That’s about as high a line as you’ll see for an NFL pre-season game. This one was a solid win for the sportsbooks.

In the second game, the Green Bay Packers rolled up 59 points (yes, that’s right, 59 points) on the Indianapolis Colts, who only managed 24. The betting action favored the home side, but it wasn’t lopsided, but it was a nice win for the betting public side when the Pack rolled up those points.

Over bettors were smiling all night.

Let’s look ahead to a few more pre-season matchups.

Saturday

NY Giants vs Baltimore Ravens Wagering Odds

The Ravens are currently a 4-point favorite for this tilt. Here we have two talented and highly touted pre-season teams facing off in Baltimore. Manning is ready to roll since suffering the head gash versus the Jets earlier this preseason. He will be without his starting C O’Hara though, which may cause some issues for the offense.

The Ravens, who some have pegged as a Super Bowl contender, look to keep their undefeated preseason record in tact.

Looking at the betting action, we see 63% of the betting public is backing the Ravens.

Dallas Cowboys vs Houston Texans Wagering Odds

The battle of Texas showcases two high-powered offenses, replete with many weapons. The stars include Tony Romo, Austin Miles, Marion Barber and Jason Witten and for the Texans, they feature Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson. Defensive stops will not be easy in this potential shoot-out.

Currently, 93% of the money is on Houston -3.

Sunday

Pittsburgh Steelers vs Denver Broncos Wagering Odds

The Sunday night match-up has Pittsburgh taking its strong D and ball control offense on the road to Denver.

First round pick, C Pouncey, saw the majority of the time with the first team this week, and look for him to get the start against Denver. Who he will be snapping the ball to is still to be determined.

Coach McDaniels has indicated that the Denver starters will play into the third quarter Sunday night.

Currently 55% of the action is on the Broncos +2.

quinton rampage jacksonBreaking down the UFC 114 wagering bout between "Rampage" Jackson and "Suga" Rashad Evans, with picks and analysis.

UFC 114: Rampage vs Evans will see the headliners Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and "Suga" Rashad Evans finally put their gloves where their mouths are. Reportedly the feud goes back to 2004.

This Saturday, May 29, 2010 we will see the grudge settled. At least the current grudge that is. Who knows what will happen during the fight that night create another grudge, requiring yet another headliner bout to settle…Dana White can only dream.

If it turns out to be a "fight of the night," we will almost assuredly get a rematch and the possible tie breaker to finally settle it once and for all. We’ll have to see how that shapes up.

Currently online sportsbooks have the lines listed as:

Quinton Rampage Jackson -115
Suga Rashad Evans -115

The above line is from SPORTSBETTING.com, but you can still find slight variations at some books, with Rashad favored in a few spots and Rampage getting a slight nod in places…but it is very close and even at most spots.

I believe the reason Rashad is getting a slight nod is based on what people feel Rampage isn’t bringing to the fight, rather than what Rashad is bringing. Where Rampage is favored, money appears to be accounting for his experience and past record, especially from the PRIDE days.

With that said, I’m beginning to wonder where Rashad is in all of this. It seems like a lot of attention is being paid to Rampage’s current condition. Is the fight really all resting on Rampage? Is it really all up to him being hot or cold on Saturday night? I don’t think so.

If you asked Rampage’s camp though, I’d expect you’d get a yes. I keep hearing things along the lines of, “he’s taking it personal”, “ he has never trained like this”, “Rashad is gonna get carried out on a stretcher”.

Almost sounds like a busted fighter who’s dying to make a comeback…I’m just saying…

UFC 114: Rampage vs Evans Analysis and Pick

When I look at Rashad, I see the strength of his offensive wrestling. How he uses the standard leg takedowns effectively. I loved how he charged in on Thiago Silva and got takedown after takedown. I think Rampage’s wrestling is great as well, but he uses it to keep the fight on the feet and pulls out the occasional, but devastating, slam. I think if Rashad goes to Rampage like he did against Thiago then Rampage may have his hands full.

On the feet, most are giving the skill advantage to Rampage because of his technical prowess. I don’t mind Rashad’s lunging punches, especially when he follows up with a single or double leg takedown and ends up on top in control position. His standup is improving enough that I think it will make Rampage weary enough to stay standing in the pocket and will get him on the move. This is a great set up for Rashad to charge in for the takedown. Rampage can stuff a lot of guys and keep the fight up, but I’ve liked what I’ve seen from Rashad, minus the Machida fight.

Rampage is a lot of things. A champion as well. Rashad was too. This one we’ll determine which former champ gets the next shot at the current light heavyweight title holder Shogun Rua.

UFC 114 Picks:

So, for the fight I’m picking Rashad.

Andy PettiteHey, look who’s back in the majors! It’s John Smoltz, who has missed over a year after undergoing shoulder surgery. He’s not doing the Tomahawk Chop in Atlanta anymore though but rather, he’s taking the mound for the Boston Red Sox.

Smoltz’s first start for the BoSox comes tonight when his new team heads to the nation’s capital to play the Nationals—Sportsbook.com has Boston listed as a -135 road favorite and the Total is set at 9.

In the last 11 games between Washington and Boston, the Red Sox have the big edge, going 10-1 SU. Of note for sports bettors is that the last 10 times Smoltz has pitched in Washington the result has been 8 overs and 2 unders, with a current mark of 6 overs and only 1 under in the last seven. Smoltz is a righty and in Washington’s last 20 games against right-handers, they are 7-13 SU, with 5 overs and 15 unders.

Smoltz will also be rooting for his old team as the Atlanta Braves are hosting the rivals of his new team, the New York Yankees.

The Yanks and Braves will be playing the rubber match of their current series with today’s meeting.  Most Online Sportsbooks have Atlanta listed as a -112 favorite.

The Braves have struggled at home against the Yanks going 2-5 SU in their last seven. New York will send Andy Pettitte to the mound and he has had much success against Atlanta with his teams going 8-1 SU in his last nine starts, while the Over/Under has gone 6-2-1 during the same stretch.

In Pettitte’s last five games in Atlanta his teams are 4-1 SU. The Braves will counter with Derek Lowe and in his last 17 starts against the Yanks, he’s 9-8 SU. In his last eight home starts against the Bronx Bombers, Derek Lowe’s teams have gone 5-3 SU.

The Cleveland Indians will also be finishing off a series tonight as they play the final game of their current set against the Pittsburgh Pirates—the Tribe is favored at -150 while the Pirates are listed at +130.

Cleveland is a very unprofitable 3-8 SU in its last 11 road games against Pittsburgh and will rely on Cliff Lee on the mound tonight. In his last 20 road starts, Cliff Lee’s teams have been a slightly profitable 11-9 SU. It will be Ross Ohlendorf’s turn in the Pittsburgh rotation and in his last six home starts, the Pirates are 5-1 SU and in his last nine home starts, the Over/Under has gone 3-6.
